Psychotherapy: Because a pill doesn't ask about your dreams or worries.
As a prescribing psychologist, Dr. Foster is able to prescribe antidepressants and other psychiatric medications but her preference is to help you work through symptoms of anxiety and depression through "talk therapy". Her specialty is a form of cognitive-behavioral treatment called, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, a treatment based on scientifically supported strategies proven to help people live happier, healthier lives.
What is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)?
What do you need for behavioral treatment to be successful?
As a former US Air Force psychologist, Dr. Foster also has extensive experience using empirically supported treatments for PTSD. Many people think that only soldiers suffer from PTSD but there are many more civilians with this condition and most are not receiving treatment. Although she has trained at the Center for Deployment Psychology and learned various PTSD treatments, Dr. Foster prefers to use Cognitive Processing Therapy for PTSD rather than Prolonged Exposure, Of CPT, Dr. Foster states, "It's a kinder, gentler form of treatment than Prolonged Exposure." Dr. Foster does NOT practice Eye-movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy.

What is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)?
- ACT is a radical change in how we see our problems. It encourages people to embrace their thoughts and feelings rather than fighting or feeling guilty for them. The treatment is based on getting closer to see your problems so that rather than avoiding, you can see more clearly and find a solution.
- Anxiety, depression, OCD, substance use disorders, and many other medical conditions have been shown to benefit from ACT and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT).

What do you need for behavioral treatment to be successful?
- Collaboration with your therapist (working together for goals)
- Trust (open and honest disclosure)
- Nonjudgmental support
- Identification of the thoughts and behaviors that keep you stuck in cycles of unhappiness
- Willingness to do homework to reinforce the concepts you learn in therapy
