Ah... life on the Autism spectrum – where every day brings a fresh surprise and a new puzzle to solve. As an adult with Autism, you're told,  "Get out there in the world and  make your dreams come true." But how are you supposed to do that when your battling with heightened sensory perceptions that turn everyday experiences into an overwhelming whirlwind of sensations. Then there's the added challenge of sifting through social cues and the subtleties of neurotypical communication! It's a bit like being given a 1000 puzzle pieces without the box that shows the picture. But it's not all uphill. After all, how many people have you're kind of mind that can hold so many fascinating facts or niche interests? So here's to the quirks, the challenges, and your unique way of understanding things – because let's face it, life would be far boring if everyone thought the same.

If you want to learn more about Adult ASD and take some online quizzes to help you understand yourself better, I suggest going to the "Embrace Autism" website. It's my favorite website for this topic.

After you've looked and taken some of their screeners, you'll have a better idea of what it's like to be on the spectrum. That's when you might want to contact me for a formal evaluation.

Questions I'm Asked Frequently about ASD

What else could it be?

There are several conditions that look like ASD. They include: Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Social Anxiety, and Attention Deficit Disorders.Avoidant and Schizoid personality disorders.

Why do boys get diagnosed more than girls?

It's true that boys are diagnosed at least 3-4 times as much as girls. Some argue that girls are just socialized to be better at masking the symptoms. Genetics also play a role.

Is it common to make it to adulthood without being diagnosed?

Adults are 2-3 times as likely to be diagnosed with autism as children. This is a travesty because that means services are delayed with so much suffering along the way.

Why Psychological Testing is Important

A diagnosis even in adulthood can help put things in perspective. "So this is why I've always felt so different from everybody." Treatment can be targeted to the social difficulties, medication for anxiety, depression and impulsivity. Self blame decreases with greater understanding. When there's a need, opportunities for financial and practical support improve.
